There were three things I wanted to see last night at the Vancouver Canadians game at Nat Bailey Stadium - someone spill mustard down the front of their shirt, someone spill beer on someone else's head, and a fly ball land flawlessly in my own beer. But at six bucks a pop, the beer is like gold (watery, watery gold) so ain't no one gonna put no balls in it. A hot dog meal was pushing $10 so the mustard on top is like a blanket of protection on a wiener from heaven. But excitement ensued surely enough.
The Van Cans are a minor league team and met the Boise Hawks during what was tagged Mexican Night at the Nat Bailey. Makes sense. I know when I think of Idaho I hear little maracas in my head. Though if it weren't for the two sombreros and a couple banners that said 'Mexico,' you may have missed the thematic brilliance of whoever does marketing for the club.
The game got off to a bit of a slow start, and not just because we were late, mystified by the notion that there'd actually be a baseball stadium in the middle of a residential area around Ontario and 30th. Things started to heat up in the 4th and 5th innings, when the Canadians took the lead. At the top of the 7th, a wimpy performance of 'Take Me Out to the Ballgame' was misconstrued by the stag party of hecklers a few rows back, who took another party of booze-infused lads out to the smoking section and did a compelling rendition of the Testosterone Shuffle. I don't know what triggered it, hopefully something that involved the phrase 'your shirt isn't striped enough, nor is your hair gelled properly'. Shirts were ripped ("Horizontal is IN, vertical makes me ANGRY") and security guards got to flex their muscles. And if that wasn't excitement enough, two helicopters circled overhead for a few minutes. It was either some overzealous copper choppers or CTV's Chopper 9 is on it.
The Canadians sent Idaho packing with a 5-3 win. There are a few more home games in the regular season and they're well worth the $12 ticket price, regardless of the type of mess that's made.

That's kind of like tea-bagging, right?
