The first Portobello West Fashion and Art Market took place yesterday at the Plaza of Nations. I found out about the event last week since it's been covered all over the local media (including a brief mention by me of course...gotta spread the word). I was excited about the the market, and had an idea of what to expect after speaking with the organizer, Carlie Smith. I anticipated a lively, hip, and trendy atmosphere, different than anything Vancouver has seen. But it was more subdued than that. Most events taking place at the Plaza of Nations are overcrowded, but worth the effort. Maybe it was because I went late in the day, but the market wasn't overly busy...or overly exciting.
Many designers that set up booths came from the trendy Main Street Fashion district, and it was nice to have them in a downtown location. I witnessed quite a few men sitting this one out on the sidelines, looking bored as their partners shopped. I don't blame them since I would have been bored too if I stayed longer than 20 minutes. The tables included, purses, clothes, jewellery, home decor, art, toys, and shoes, among other things, but unfortunately there wasn't anything I felt I couldn't find somewhere else. It is an impressive outlet for local designers to showcase their work and meet their customers though, and I think any event that supports entrepeneurs is great for the city.
I love buying unique gifts for people, so I'm sure I'll stop by around Christmas. Some of the local designers worth checking out included Barefoot Countessa, Little MissVintage, With a Twist and The Petri Dish.
The next Portobello West Market will set up on September 24th.

About Portobello West: It is too bad you came so late, it was completely packed between noon and 3pm. The music was really great and as you say the designers were all from Main Street - where else in this city are they? I've looked and they are NOT on Robson or Fourth or Commercial Drive that I can see - btw - Barefoot Contessa didn't show up, kinda weird she was one of your reccommendations from the Market

It's good to know it was packed earlier. MANY of the designers were from Main St..but no, not all of them. And yes, it's too bad Barefoot Countessa didn't show up, I definately think she's worth checkin out.

I think the event was a huge success! The number of people who showed up indicates that this is the kind of thing that vancouver is ready for. It was great to have an event that showcases so much local creativity and talent. There were so many interesting items to choose from. I will be there next month!

I loved all the unique clothes, purses and jewellery not to mention all the other great items that were showcased. So much to choose from and I love that we're supporting our local community. Great music and atmosphere... I'll definitely bring my friends next time.

In Buenos Aires there is a new trend: Bars will open up during "non-bar" hours and rent out their booths and tables to designers. These places get packed with customers.
