Sometimes I go out to bars just so I can go get food afterwards. I go through phases. During my early years of bar-hopping in Victoria, it was pizza or bust. There was also a wild Pita Pit phase thrown in there. Once I waited in the 4-mile-long 3 a.m. Pita Pit line only to have the person screw up my order and it brought tears to my eyes. No joke. This is serious business. But then my late-night dining tendencies took a turn for the better when I discovered Fritz on Davie and Granville. It's a European fryhouse and their poutine is to die for.

It's gotten to the point that I've started to resent going through the motions of a 'night out' because it prolongs the wait for poutine. As soon as a less-than-desirable song comes on or there's a lull in conversation, I'm like the guy in the Tim Horton's commercial who wants to go for lunch at 9 am. "Poutine? Guys? Yeah? Poutine?"

"We just got here."

Poutine is a native of Quebec and, by definition, consists of french fries, cheese curds and gravy. By heartfelt analogy, on the other hand, it consists of heaven, amazing and delicious. Fritz has the art of poutine down. Fresh-cut deep fried french fries, cheese curds that were seemingly curdled with tender loving care, and gravy. Straight up gravy. It's not pretty to look at, and I've said it before and I'll say it again, it smells a bit like puke. Oh, but it's makes such perfect sense. Maybe it's the fact that I grew up a stone's throw from Ontario's border with Quebec but I think it's an element of Quebecois culture that everyone should have in them.

Fritz also has other things like regular fries and a plethora of mayonnaise variations and other dipping sauces. Also hot dogs or something. I've never had anything but the poutine. And that'll never change. Keep in mind that they close a bit earlier on weekdays than weekends so if you're thinking of a late-night poutine mission on a weekday, plan ahead. Running up to the doors of Fritz just after they've closed at 2 am on a Wednesday morn is enough to make you cry like your pita got screwed up. Not that I'd know or anything...

i think the poutine from Beligian Fries (on Commercial Drive) is better, but it's sadly far away from any bars and closed well before going home time.

this is the best poutine/fries place! i've had it in montreal, but fritz is still oh so good! and try the dips, especially the curry mango chutney. if you're weary, then ask them for a taste, you won't regret it!

Dude,

Good call, except you should check out the garlic dip. Seriously man, it's amazing.

Plus, I love how the tables in this place have little holes for your fry cones. Such a nice touch.

Best,

Jason
