The Greyboy Allstars Shine at Richard's

Karl Denson of The Greyboy Allstars

As The Greyboy Allstars started into their first song, the crowd at Richard's on Richards knew they were in for a treat. GBA is often defined by a dance style called boogaloo; after witnessing this all-star cast of musicians lay down, I understand why. All it took was Karl Densons's James-Brown-inspired yawp into What Happened to Television?, and the audience was thrown into a funky dancing frenzy. The band's energy was even more impressive, and its members seem to have more fun with each passing song.

Karl Denson was a powerful presence on the stage. It seems that everything he does, he does with soul, and his vocals and multi-instrumental work carried a raw force that made the audience yearn for more. Denson had a way of playfully interacting with the crowd that made you feel very much a part of the music.

Fancy Footwork

This week has been musically good to me; I had the chance to see two great shows in 6 days! While I could probably stare at Vancouver's bizarre weather for a few hours, I thought I'd give you a chance at a good music week by sharing another 7 days worth of great concerts!

Thursday, Mar 27
As usual, check the last Concert BReak to access tonight's shows.

Friday, Mar 28
Louis XIV @ Richard's on Richards: A four-piece glam-rock posse from San Diego.
Brasstronaut @ Backstage Lounge: Earnest and simple Vancouver indie. I really like how Bryan Davies trumpet works with Edo Van Breemen's vocals.
Rabnett5 @ Waldorf Hotel: I heard of this Vancouver jazz group through a concert go-er at last night's Greyboy Allstars show. Their instrumentation is similar to GBA (sax, keys, guitar, bass and drums).
Bob Wiseman @ UBC Sub Building: Bob is an eccentric fellow from Toronto who is pretty experimental about his indie rock.
Brent Randall & His Pinecones @ Astoria Hotel (Day One): This Halifax group may change tempos and styles from song to song, but Randall's slightly psychedelic vocals are constant.

Vancouver's Night with Citizen Cope

Citizen Cope at the Commodore
I love folk, I'm drawn to soul and I groove to hip-hop. These details are what lured me to Citizen Cope, whose music is an amalgamation of all three genres. Cope, a.k.a. Clarence Greenwood, filled up the Commodore Thursday night and, albeit ill, pleased the crowd with his low-key musicality.

The line-up for the show was mainly composed of concert-goers in their early-to-mid twenties, all huddled happily in roughly distinguishable groups of skaters, potheads and blonde girls in short skirts. At 8pm the doors of the Commodore swung open and the venue demonstrated its abilities as a restaurant and bar. As the crowd grew, diehard devotees began contemplating the heights of Greenwood's lyrical and musical creativity with eager anticipation.

Cope walked on stage as the clock struck 10 and began strumming the opening chords of "Salvation" to deafening cheers. The dim lighting and Greenwood's pained expression worked to increase the emotional atmosphere around the three-song solo-acoustic introduction.

Still Waiting - The Greyboy Allstars

The first time I saw the names Greyboy and Karl Denson, it was on the back cover of The September Sessions Soundtrack: track 3, "Grey's Groove". As a lover of bands like St. Germain and Thievery Corporation, Denson's expressive flute solo in combination with the tune's flowing beats had a way of enveloping me in the sound.

Six years later, the band Greyboy and Denson co-founded are coming to town. The Greyboy Allstars take the acid jazz of Grey's Groove and inject it with the funk of Sly and the Family Stone and the soul of James Brown—a mixture that guarantees to get listeners dancing.

I had the opportunity to ask GBA bassist Chris Stillwell some questions via email. Continue reading for his responses.
