georgiastraightcover.jpg About a month ago, I wrote about an upcoming Western Magazine Awards Foundation seminar for aspiring magazine photographers - the first in a series that is going on throughout the next couple of months.

I didn't end up attending (photography isn't really my thing) but I hear it was a great success.

The next seminar in the series is scheduled to take place this Thursday night. Entitled Redesign and Art Direction for Magazines, this time around two speakers will be featured: Vanessa Leigh, Publisher and Fashion Editor of ION magazine (my employer) and Janet McDonald, Assistant Art Director of The Georgia Straight.

From personal experience, I can tell you that Vanessa is a casual, amusing speaker who is sure to give newcomers to the industry interesting insight into independent publishing, and magazine redesign. Officially, her portion of the seminar is called Effective Communication and It's Results, but don't let the boring title scare you.

Janet, who I've never met, will be talking about "The New Millennium of Graphic Design". She'll be passing along tips about how to make money in her very competitive industry niche. Nothing wrong with that. Again, it's only $10 and totally worth it. Call or email (contact info below) to reserve your seat.

if ever a magazine needed a redesign it's the Straight. But then I hear the designer is the pubisher's son, so I guess it's not on the cards

I find the Straight interesting. I moved to Vancouver only a few years ago, and since then have had the Straight held up to me as the shining example of independent, cutting-edge media to me.

It really doesn't seem that way. It strikes me as a magazine which at one point was innovative, but that has fallen into a sort of routine or formula that perhaps was, at the start, fresh and new, but which no longer is.

Maybe I'm missing something about it, and I'm not saying the Straight isn't a good publication, but I don't see it really as on the edge, or such a beacon of the independent press. I see it and I think, "meh, seems okay." Not really different than when I see people reading the Sun. They're just different demographics.
